SK's in-house forum discusses 'deep change' in businesses

August 23, 2021

By Yi Whan-woo

SK Group kicked off its annual Icheon Forum, Monday, with more than 500 guests and speakers from both Korea and abroad scheduled to join online discussions through Thursday on digital transformation and how it has been changing the business environment at an accelerating pace. Icheon, in Gyeonggi Province, is the home of the conglomerate's think tank.

Under the theme "deep change," the in-house forum also focuses on helping SK Group's executives and rank-and-profile employees gain insight on corporate responsibility on a wide range of social and economic issues.

Those issues especially fall under the category of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG), a framework that has emerged as a global tool in measuring a company's commitment to sustainability development.

"This year's Icheon Forum is adding new topics that can help materialize SK's vision for deep change," the company said in a press release. It assessed the invited guests and speakers will enhance SK's communication on a path toward joint prosperity with society.

The opening day saw a lecture delivered by Harvard University professor Michael Sandel whose recent book, "The Tyranny of Merit: What's Become of the Common Good," became another sensation in Korea following his 2008 work, "Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do."

Later on the same day, another Harvard University professor, Rebecca Henderson, talked about the significance of ESG management amid the ongoing paradigm shift businesses find themselves in. From Tuesday to Wednesday, the discussions will center on balancing work and happiness in the new normal as well as new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data and "metaverse" that pose both challenges and opportunities for the corporate world.

On Thursday, SK Chairman Chey Tae-won will review the topics discussed over the three-day event, especially in relation to the "financial story," a business strategy he brought up last year.

The 2021 Icheon Forum will include the first-ever AI contest, with participation of more than 700 SK engineers and researchers to bolster AI development within the company. The winners will be announced on Thursday.

"Chairman Chey has repeatedly expressed hope that the Icheon Forum serves as a base for bringing SK staff and involved parties together to materialize SK's role for a sustainable future," the company said. The Icheon Forum began in 2017 to cope with challenges faced by the business community, including geopolitical risks.
