Google fined ₩200 billion for restricting competition

September 14, 2021

The Korean antitrust agency fined Google 207.4 billion won ($177 million) for using the success of its mobile operating system (OS) to squeeze out competition.

According to the Korean Fair Trade Commission (FTC) on Tuesday, Google prohibited smartphone manufactures, especially Samsung Electronics, from developing or installing OS systems using Google’s Android algorithm.

The FTC said Google’s anti-fragmentation agreement with smartphone manufacturers has limited the release of new smart devices using the new OS system.

This includes Samsung Electronics' failure to introducing a smart watch in 2013, LG Electronics’ smart speaker in 2018 and Amazon’s smart TV between 2018 and 2019.

According to the FTC, Google dominates the mobile market. The company’s mobile OS global market share has grown from 38 percent in 2010 to 97.7 percent in 2019.

It’s mobile app market share between 2012 and 2019 was between 95 to 99 percent globally, excluding China.

The FTC started its probe into Google in 2017, after complaints that Google was limiting competition by forcing smartphone manufacturers to install its own apps on the home screen of phones, including its search engine as default, in exchange for free use of its Android OS system.
