Audi's RS e-Tron GT: Built for speed

November 23, 2021

By Kim Hyun-bin

Audi-Volkswagen Korea is making headway into the high-performance electric vehicle (EV) market, with its impressive new vehicle lineup, including the e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT.

The question is whether Audi can capture the local high-performance market with its expected release this year.

For a better glimpse of what "high-performance" is all about, Audi-Volkswagen Korea held an "Audi Experience Media Roadshow" Tuesday, for reporters to test-drive several of its newest and recently released lineups.

The roadshow started from Seoul and ended in Jeongseon in Gangwon Province, an approximately 256km drive, providing the opportunity to test-drive several of Audi-Volkswagen's EVs and gas-powered vehicles.

The Korea Times took part in the event by test-driving the e-tron sportsback (SB) 50 quattro, Q8, RS 5 Sportback and the set-to-be-released e-Tron GT and RS e-Tron GT.

Among the new vehicles, the most impressive of course is the RS e-Tron GT. The title of "RS" is given to Audi's racing sports lineup, indicating the vehicles' high performance.

"The e-tron GT is the lighthouse for Audi's journey into the future, performance, instantaneous power and elegance all in one," Audi-Volkswagen CEO Jeffery Mannering said to reporters at the Park Roche Hotel in Jeongseon, on November 9. "The e-tron GT includes every part of Audi's DNA that has evolved over the last 100 years."

The e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT constitute the company's second pure EV lineup, and are set to enter the local market following behind the e-Tron 55 quattro and e-Tron 50 quattro sports utility vehicle (SUV) last year.

The e-Tron GT and RS e-Tron GT were test-driven at a temporarily set up circuit in Seoul Grand Park in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, as the vehicle was not fully registered in the country. The course was enough to test the vehicles' acceleration and cornering.

The e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT showcase 476 and 598 horsepower, with maximum torques of 64.3kg.m and 84.7kg.m, respectively, but with the booster mode engaged, the e-tron GT pushes 530 horsepower and 65.3kg.m, while the RS e-tron GT reaches 646 horsepower and a torque of 84.7kg.m.

The e-tron GT takes 4.5 seconds to go from 0 to 100km while the RS e-tron GT takes only 3.6 seconds.

Pushing down on the accelerator pedal gives enough feel of what a high-performance EV really is, instantly attracting drivers to its smooth power transition and speed.

The acceleration brings back the feel of a scene from the "Fast and the Furious" movie series, forcing the driver back against their seat while feeling the full thrust of the vehicle's capabilities.

"EVs are different from conventional vehicles as they reach maximum torque and show massive acceleration instantly and it all depends how well the vehicle absorbs the instant torque," an Audi instructor said. "The e-tron GT uses a quattro system that divides the optimum torque to the four tires, which is its strength."

Even with in slight rain, driving was not disturbed at all; with the exception of raindrops on the windshield, the impact was hardly noticeable.

The brake capabilities were also noteworthy, halting the vehicle from high speeds with stability accompanied by smooth cornering.
